Backgammon is a fun and fascinating game. There are elements of skill
and luck - an average player can beat a world champion grandmaster at
any game with good dice, but probably not consistently over many
games.
It is a game of logic and reasoning, as much as it is
a game of intuition and “feel”. Much scientific analysis and research
has been done, rigorous mathematical models and theories developed, and
many books on backgammon strategies and tactics have been written by
brilliant minds. Software using artificial intelligence to analyse
backgammon exists for many years already.
Intuition and
“feel” for the game comes with experience. The more you play, the more
you encounter the seemingly infinite different positions and
configurations in the game, each of them with subtle nuances, that
require different tactics, strategies, and even philosophies to handle.
Yet, even the most learned and experienced players in the world may
still sometimes make clouded judgments and terrible blunders.
“The
cruelest of games,” as backgammon is also known, is also the most
exhilarating of games at times. The extreme euphoria and sorrows that
come with the unexpected turns of fortunes that occur in a game, can be
a serious test to one’s character and cultivation. The reflection and
introspection that follows may lead to inspiration and enlightenment in
one’s life.
Backgammon in China
Although not many people play backgammon in China today, few
may know that the game enjoyed 1500 years of popularity in China, and
therefore was an important element of China’s cultural history.
It is now the mission of the Macao Backgammon Association,
as the China Representative of the World Backgammon Federation, to
educate and promote the beautiful mind sport of backgammon again in
China, to re-introduce this element of cultural history to our
Motherland.
In the initial phase, we shall be holding
regular meet-ups in Macao, Zhuhai, and in other cities in China, to
teach the uninitiated how to play, and for players who already know
the game, to gather and play regularly. We shall organise local
tournaments, and apply ratings to players. We are producing
instructional material in Chinese, in the form of short videos, to be
posted on popular social media platforms. We are translating selected
serious literature on backgammon into the Chinese language.
It is our greater vision to hold an annual International
Backgammon Tournament in Macao, where players from all around the
world would come and play world-class competitive backgammon over
several days. As voting member of the World Backgammon Federation, we
shall introduce international rules and standards, ethics and
practices to this International Backgammon Tournament in Macao.
Enough talk. Let the games begin!
